CYCLES OF COLONIALISM:
South Africa in Book, Bits, and Film

OBS is pleased to present the Internet projection of Miramax Films' upcoming release of Cry, the Beloved Country, based on the 1948 book by Alan Paton. The themes explored -- economic and political exploitation, fear, hope, mercy, and justice -- are as relevant today as they were at the beginning of apartheid South Africa, and can speak to the people of every nation that has struggled to understand and reconcile their own relationships with colonialism.

We invite you to explore the movie as a reflection of life, and view it as frames of past and present history on the kaleidoscopic tapestry of the Internet. Through internal links you can follow thematic threads within the presentation, and through external links included at the bottom of each section, you can follow the threads to other related sites. The entry point into this Internet projection changed daily throughout November and December of 1995, and now the site continues to expand, like a colony of the mind, in response to the way people use and respond to it. We welcome your participation and will credit your contributions.
