Like the Scotsman Eric Liddell, who credited God with giving him both the gifts of speech and speed. Running for Great Britain in the 1924 Paris Olympics, Liddell withdrew for religious reasons from a race that he had been favored to win. Later in the Games, he did earn the gold medal in another.
