Grantland Rice

Grantland Rice, the dean of American sportswriters during what is sometimes called the "Golden Age of American Sports" in the 1920s, is perhaps best remembered today for his prayerlike saying about sportsmanship:

For when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name, He marks not that you won or lost, but how you played the game.
