Peace in Chechnya?
Russian President Boris Yeltsin's trip to the secessionist region of Chechnya reminds us of the 17-month war there -- and the upcoming presidential elections in Russia. Yeltsin and Chechen rebel leader Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev reached a cease-fire agreement, scheduled to go into effect on June 1. There is already much speculation about whether or not the truce will hold.
The war in Chechnya is a matter of deep concern to Russian voters, who will go to the polls on June 16. President Yeltsin is running against Communist candidate Gennady Zyuganov and several other contenders in a fiercely contested race.
