Question of the day: What is Albania's hottest new export item?
The Washington Post reported recently that Albania's fledgling capitalist economy has hatched a company with a product near and dear to the palates of many French and Italian diners. The company, Vival Exports, exports frogs, which live in abundance in the marshy lowlands of Albania's coastal region.
Kanan Shakaj, the brains behind this bouncy industry, runs Vival Exports together with his three brothers. Mr. Shakaj's business has branched out into the marketing of eels, snails, and prawns as well as the tasty Balkanika variety of frogs that totaled some 400 tons of export business last year.
Interestingly enough, Albanians themselves do not generally eat frogs.
